Every bride deserves to be treated special as she prepares for her wedding. Planning a bridal shower is one of the things she should not have to stress about. Whether you are the maid of honor, a sister of the bride, or a relative who wants to help make her approaching wedding even more special, you may be involved in planning and creating a shower for her.
What is a Bridal Shower?
A bridal shower is a party to celebrate the upcoming wedding with the bride. The purpose is twofold; first, to celebrate and rejoice together about the coming joining together of the bride and groom. The second purpose of the bridal shower is to “shower” the bride with gifts. Usually the gifts are items she will use as a new wife. They can range between personal items, such as lingerie, to practical items, such as kitchen ware. There is almost no limit when it comes to what is appropriate for a bridal shower gift, unless there are personal preferences.
Who is Invited
Most often the etiquette for a bridal shower is followed. The entire bridal party (women only), the mother of both the bride and the groom, and all other women who are invited to the wedding, are generally included in the list of who to invite to a bridal shower.
Some brides have more than one shower, and the guest list is broken down into sections. If there is more than one shower, the list may be split up. Sometimes it is split into family of the bride, family of the groom, friends of the families, and friends of the bride and groom.
These guest guidelines are for traditional bridal showers, which would not include men. If you are throwing a more modern Jack and Jill shower, you may add men to the list in the same categories.
What to Plan For a Bridal Shower
Food; You can do as much or as little food at the shower as you and the bride prefer. Finger foods are fairly easy and inexpensive to have. You will want to include either a cake or something similar such as cupcakes.
Decorations: Decorating does not have to be expensive. You can easily use photos of the bride and groom, streamers, and balloons, and come up with a variety of attractive decorations. Many brides like to have their wedding colors incorporated into the decorations.
Games and Prizes; Games are a great way to have fun, break the ice, and help people get to know the bride and groom better. There are usually inexpensive prizes for the winners of the games. A minimum of two games is suggested, depending on how long they take.
Don't Forget
As the hostess of the shower, you will want to arrange to have someone in charge of writing down what gifts the bride receives and who gives each gift. This will make sending thank you notes much easier for her when the time comes. It may also be a good idea to have someone assigned to taking pictures. That way the memories you are making will be recorded for many years.
