If you have a newly built home or have had some renovations done to your home to make it more energy efficient, chances are you may have a new type of water heater that is tankless. This kind of appliance does not work like traditional ones. There is no way for them to hold water and heat it up. In this type of appliance, the water gets heated as it moves through the pipes in your home. The heating element can either be gas or electric. When the weather is warm, you don't have to worry about doing too much to keep your appliance working properly, but in the winter time or when there is a chill in the air, it is important that you do some maintenance on this appliance to keep it working. If you keep your water heater from freezing, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of hot water much longer and save on repair bills.

One of the first things you need to do anytime there is cold weather is to cover up your water heater. Don't use any type of material because you don't want to block any vents or start any fires. If you take a trip to your local hardware store, you can purchase an insulated cover that is made specifically for your appliance. The cover helps to keep the cold air our and reduces the risk of your tank freezing, especially if it is located outside of your home or in the basement.

Keep this appliance away from drafts. If you have no control over where it is located, find something to create a barrier between your appliance and the elements. Keep in mind that whatever you use to block the wind and drafts, should be placed several feet in front of your heater to avoid causing any interference with its operation.

If it is located in a place where it gets cold, you may want to have a heater installed into the room where you keep your appliance. The heater will keep the room warm and keep the water in your pipes from becoming frozen.

If you have the time and the capabilities, you may also want to consider insulating your water pipes. You don't have to cover the whole length of the pipes, just the portion that leads up to your water heater. You can purchase these sleeves at your local hardware store. This also protects your appliance so that it is not damaged from water that is too cold flowing through its components.

If you find that even after doing all you can to keep your pipes from freezing and prevent your appliance from going out on you at an inopportune time, it is time for you to bring in the professionals. Do your homework to find a good water heater service company to come and take a look at what is going on. There is no reason why you should ever be without hot water in your home if you have paid your utility bills.
