If you have a newly built home or have had some renovations done to your home to make it more energy efficient, chances are you may have a new type of water heater that is tankless. This kind of appliance does not work like traditional ones. There is no way for them to hold water and heat it up. In this type of appliance, the water gets heated as it moves through the pipes in your home. The heating element can either be gas or electric. When the weather is warm, you don't have to worry about doing too much to keep your appliance working properly, but in the winter time or when there is a chill in the air, it is important that you do some maintenance on this appliance to keep it working. If you keep your water heater from freezing, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of hot water much longer and save on repair bills.One of the first things you need to do anytime there is cold weather is to cover up your water heater. Don't use any type of material because you don't want to block any vents or start any fires. If you take a trip to your local hardware store, you can purchase an insulated cover that is made specifically for your appliance.
